Message I painted two cars when I was in high school. Both in my back yard. Prepping for paint is not fun. Anyone can spray, but when you start prepping the car you start to find other things you weren't expecting like previous bondo work. I was working with a 30gal Ingersoll rand compressor and a HVLP gun that I ended up throwing away because I didn't clean it. Keep in mind that you have to spend sun up to sun down to give it nice even coats several times between flashing. But that's not the fun part. Wet sanding and buffing is the fun part. =) I have a new Astro Pneumatic LVLP gun set (primer and paint) if you are interested. Was contemplating painting my car again but thinking about the old HS days really puts a damper on my dreams of painting again. Either you have the money or you have the time, but I doubt anyones first time at paint will look better than a $400 paint from Maaco.
I got a quote of $800 for whole car color change using their top of the line paint in factory color. $800 isn't bad considering paint and a decent spray gun will run you half that. Oh.. that's if I do some work for them, like removing lights, gaskets, fenders, bumpers for them. They just come in, sand everything down and get to work right away. Just ask them to show you some work they are working on in the back. Their work was a helluvalot nicer than anyones first, second, or tenth time painting. It looked like factory paint. If you want show car shine, ask one of the guys in the back to come over on the weekend and wetsand and buff the car to a show car shine. The guy I talked to wanted $150 for it.
